When growing an organization and developing its people is done well, the results are wide spread and long lasting.  Few people have done this better in the self-storage industry than Natolie Ochi. 

Ms. Ochi has over 30 years of property management experience, with 25 years in the self-storage industry. 

Ms. Ochi is the President, CEO, and Partner of SKS Management LLC, a self-storage management firm based in Oakland, CA. The firm started in 1998 and currently operates 28 facilities; 12 of its own Saf Keep Storage branded facilities and 16 third-party-owned locations. SKS Management oversees over 2.2 million sq. ft. of storage space in California and Hawaii, generating $61.75M  gross revenue in 2022, and currently employs 110 team members. Over one-third of SKS' team members have been with the company for over 15 years, which attests to the company's excellent employee retention and training programs emphasizing "Service Every Step of the Way."

Ms. Ochi has a B.A. from Stanford University and an MBA from National University. Ms. Ochi was the past Chair of the Board of Directors for the California Self Storage Association and continues serving as the CSSA's Education & Training Committee Chair. She is also one of the founding members of the Asian Women Leaders in Philanthropy Fund organization. In her free time, she enjoys golfing, cooking, and traveling.

The Trust for Public Land is active all across the USA working to connect people to the outdoors.

It is working on a project on the same bay as our host hotel just on the other side of the Lava Lava club.

Kamuela  will tell us about their great work across the state of Hawai'i and they will take a small group of us on a tour of the new project. 

The TPL Hawai'i advisory board includes the Self Storage Association Hall of Fame member Ed Olson. 

Kamuela Kaapana was born and raised in Maunalua, Oʻahu. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Language) from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and a Master’s degree in Education in Instruction and Curriculum from Concordia University – Portland. Kaapana has dedicated most of his career providing children to adults the opportunity to learn life skills and academic knowledge through Native Hawaiian language and cultural practices. 

Kaapana has also spent time working with children and youth who have mental health and/or developmental disabilities, incorporating Native Hawaiian culture into metal health therapies as well as working as a cultural researcher, drafting cultural impact assessment reports for proposed development projects in Hawaiʻi. 

Currently, Kaapana is a project associate with the Trust for Public Land, a land conservation non-profit, assisting in land protection efforts across the Hawaiian Islands. Outside of his profession, Kaapana is dedicated to the practice of hula (dance) and oli (chant), hiking in the forest, and spending time with ʻohana and friends. 

TPL's work in Hawai'i is making a difference. The organization is helping to protect the environment, connect people to nature, and create healthier, more livable communities.

In addition to its work on the ground, TPL also advocates for policies that support the conservation of land and open space in Hawai'i. The organization works with elected officials, businesses, and other organizations to promote policies that protect our natural resources and make our communities more livable.

You'll want to talk with him about his experiences in building two related but different storage operations. This year's session with Alex will explore how the two strategies can work well together.

Over the years, Danny Akaka, Jr. has presented stories and songs about the wonderful places and people of Hawai'i to those of us fortunate enough to attend the unconference. This year, Danny's travels will make it impossible for him to spend time with us.  He will be elsewhere taking Aloha to the world.
